My Gear

While I am not an extremely tech-focused photographer, I still love to talk and learn about gear. Specs and features are important of course, but my focus as of late has come down to the experience of using the hardware. How it feels in your hand, what sound the shutter makes, and what it inspires you to do have all superseded the pixel count of the sensor. Most importantly, is it fun to use?

Leica M10

The Leica M10, while the least elaborate in terms of features, has yielded some of my best images as a result of the attention it demands from the user. This is a rangefinder camera, meaning that all of the focus is done manually, and there is no electronic preview through the viewfinder to show exactly what the image will look like once the shutter clicks. It is a deeply immersive experience that I've only recently come to desire, and have quickly found a deep appreciation for. Also... it's a Leica, and the images definitely have the "Leica look" that no one seems to be able to articulate well.

Fuji X100V

For the past year that I've had this camera, the Fuji X100V has been my favorite camera to use hands down. Well, until I got the Leica. It remains a fantastic camera, and was what put me on the path to getting the Leica thanks to the various dials on top that make the experience of shooting so enjoyable. It's small, discreet, fits in a jacket pocket, and the perfect travel photography camera. Some of my best photos of 2021/2022 have come from it.

Sony A7IV & A6500

An ultra reliable workhorse, the Sony A7IV is an upgrade from 2 previous years with the A7III. This is my primary landscape photography camera due to its durability in inclement weather, battery life, incredible sensor, and wide swathe of advanced features that make pretty much any kind of shot possible. I don't really enjoy shooting street photography with it because it's just too big and open ended, but when I need a sharp high resolution screen to compose shots on top of a windy mountain, this is the tool for the job.
